Educational research purposes

This graduate school aims to cultivate human resources who can lead research and development related to information science technology, based on systematic knowledge of information engineering and scientific methods. It also strives to contribute to the advancement of information engineering.

Admission Policy 招生政策

The Master's program in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at Tokyo University has sufficient basic academic skills to study specialized fields, aiming to elucidate various issues related to information science technology and contribute significantly to social development through international activities.

  1. Entrance examination and entrance period

The entrance examination is held twice a year, in summer and winter.

入學考試每年舉行兩次,分別在夏季和冬季舉行。

The summer entrance examination is conducted in each major of computer science, mathematical information sciences, system information sciences, electronic information sciences, intelligent machine information sciences and creative information sciences. The winter entrance examination is held for majors of system information sciences, electronic information sciences and creative information sciences.

暑期入學考試在計算機科學、數(shù)學信息科學、系統(tǒng)信息科學、電子信息科學、智能機械信息科學和創(chuàng)造性信息科學的各個專業(yè)進行。冬季入學考試針對系統(tǒng)信息科學、電子信息科學和創(chuàng)造性信息科學專業(yè)舉行。

The enrollment period for those who pass the summer entrance examination and winter entrance examination is respectively April of Heisei 7 (2025) and October of Heisei 7 (2025). However, depending on the major, there may be cases where applicants can enroll early in August of Heisei 6 (2024) as a result of passing the summer entrance exam or in February of Heisei 7 (2025) after passing the winter entrance exam. In addition, new applications are required to obtain residence qualification certificates at this university when enrolling, so we strongly recommend that you follow the standard enrollment period (note). Furthermore, due to delays caused by security export control reviews and other admissions approvals, it might take longer than the dates listed below for some applicants to receive notification of their admission approval. Therefore, we also recommend the standard enrollment period.

(Note): As stated in "Item 10. Matters to be noted (6)", foreign nationals must obtain a residence status that does not interfere with their enrollment procedures for graduate school studies.

It is necessary to obtain it by that time. It usually takes about three months from the announcement of passing, and you may not be able to catch up with early enrollment. For details on the flow from passing to admission, please refer to Appendix "Flowchart for Newcomers' Admission".

2. Qualification for Application

The application qualifications for those who wish to enroll in April of Reiwa 7 (2025) are as follows. Those who wish to enroll in October of Reiwa 6 (2024) should replace "Reiwa 7 (2025) March 31" with "Reiwa 6 (2024) September 30," and those who wish to enroll in October of Reiwa 7 (2025) should replace "Reiwa 7 (2025) March 31" with "Reiwa 7 (2025) September 30."

(1) Graduates of Japanese universities or those who are expected to graduate by March 31, 2025 under Reiwa era (Note 1).

(2) In foreign countries, those who have completed a 16-year course of school education or are expected to complete it by March 31st, Heisei 7th year (2025)(Note 2)

(3) Graduates of courses lasting more than 3 years in foreign universities or other educational institutions (excluding those evaluated by the relevant government agencies of that country), who have obtained degrees equivalent to bachelor's degree. Those with a graduation date before March 31, 2025 are also included.

?Foreign schools designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

?Specialized courses of a specialized school designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (limited to those with an academic term exceeding 4 years and meeting other standards set by the Minister).

• University Ordinance established by universities or ministries and commissions, individual laws of independent administrative corporations for university schools

(Notes 4)① The individuals who correspond to item (6) above are those who do not meet items (1)-(5), but have graduated from educational facilities equivalent to a four-year university, such as graduates or completers. These individuals will be recognized by this research department as having academic qualifications comparable to that of Japanese universities through individual admission qualification reviews.

② For those who wish to apply based on qualifications (6), a document-based individual admission qualification review will be conducted before application. The documents specified by this research department must be submitted to the examination office of this research department (see below No. 11) no later than May 13, 2024 (Monday) for summer admissions and October 28, 2024 (Monday) for winter admissions. Please inquire in advance about the submission requirements for these documents.

3. Selection Method

In the selection of entrants, first a document screening based on submitted documents is conducted.

The results of the document screening for admission to summer term will be posted on our website (

https://www.i.u-tokyo.ac.jp) around 3 pm, July 16th, Wednesday in Heisei Year 6 (2024).

Next, for those who pass the document screening, a written test will be conducted and an oral examination may also be carried out if necessary. The results of these tests will then be comprehensively evaluated to select candidates for admission.

4. Test date and location

(1) The written examination of general education subjects (Mathematics) for the summer entrance exam will be held on August 15, 2024 (Thursday), from 13:00 to 15:30 (refer to item 5 below). The test for general education subjects (Programming) will take place on August 16, 2024 (Friday); please refer to the admission guidelines for the Department of Creative Information Science for details. The specialized subject tests and oral examinations will be conducted between August 19, 2024 (Monday) and August 26, 2024 (Monday).

(1) 夏季入學考試通識教育科目(數(shù)學)筆試將于 2024 年 8 月 15 日(星期四)13:00 至 15:30 舉行(參見以下第 5 項)。通識教育科目(編程)考試將于 2024 年 8 月 16 日(星期五)舉行;詳情請參閱創(chuàng)意信息科學系的入學指南。專業(yè)科目考試和口試將于 2024 年 8 月 19 日(星期一)至 2024 年 8 月 26 日(星期一)期間進行。

(2) The general education subjects of the summer entrance examination (mathematics and programming) will be conducted at Tokyo University's Hongo campus. Details such as location, time schedule, and exam-related notes will be notified when the admission ticket is sent out. For details on the locations and schedules for specialized subject exams, please refer to each department’s entrance examination guidebook.

(2) 夏季入學考試的通識教育科目(數(shù)學和程序設置)將在東京大學本鄉(xiāng)校區(qū)進行。地點、時間表和考試相關注意事項等詳細信息將在準考證寄出時通知。關于專業(yè)科目考試的地點和時間,請參照各學科的入學考試指南。

(3) The winter entrance examination will be held from early January to mid-February of Heisei 7 (2025). Generally, the examinations will be conducted at Tokyo University's Hongo campus. However, in some cases, online exams may be implemented for certain subjects. For detailed implementation methods including time schedules, please refer to our department’s admission information webpage and each subject’s admission guidebook.

For majors in Mathematical and Information Sciences, Systems Information Science, and Creative Information Science, it is possible to take entrance examinations for other majors. Please refer to each major's admission brochure.

In the Knowledge Engineering and Information Science major, oral examinations are conducted for questions equivalent to written exams (special subjects). For details, please refer to the admission brochure of the major.

6. Application procedure

(1) The application documents, such as the admission wish form, should be created using the web application system. All necessary documents must also be converted to PDF format and uploaded to the web application system. Detailed information can be found on this research institute's entrance examination information webpage or instructions in the web application system. The admission approval for those who are expected to enroll in April of Heisei 7 (2025) will be notified by email to each individual after completing the review process of "Tokyo University Security Export Management" and before October late November of Heisei 6 (2024), as scheduled.

預計在平成 7 年(2025 年)4 月入學的學生,在完成“東京大學安全保障出口管理”審查程序后和平成 6 年(2024 年)10 月下旬之前,將通過電子郵件通知每個人。

(2) Winter entrance examination

① The qualified candidates for document screening will be posted on this research department's website around 3 pm, December 20th (Friday), in Heisei Year 6 (2024). ② Candidates who pass both written and oral examinations will be announced on our website at around 3pm, February 14th (Friday), in Heisei Year 7 (2025).

(1) 平成 6 年級(2024 年)12 月 20 日(星期五)下午 3 點左右,本研究部的網(wǎng)站上公布了合格的資料審查候選人。(2) 筆試和口試均通過的考生將于平成 7 年級(2025 年)2 月 14 日(星期五)下午 3 點左右在我們的網(wǎng)站上公布。

③ The admission approval for those who are scheduled to enroll in April of Heisei 7 (2025) will be notified by email after completing the review process of "Tokyo University Security Export Management" around late February of Heisei 7 (2025). For those who are scheduled to enroll in October of Heisei 7 (2025), the admission approval will be notified by email before late March of Heisei 7 (2025) (scheduled).

(3) 平成 7 年(2025 年)2 月下旬完成“東京大學安全保障出口管理”審查程序后,將通過電子郵件通知計劃于 2025 年 4 月入學的學生。對于計劃在平成 7 年(2025 年)10 月入學的人,將在平成 7 年(2025 年)(預定)3 月下旬之前通過電子郵件通知入學批準。

(3) Those who have received notification of admission approval shall follow the instructions for enrollment procedures separately sent. For those enrolling in 2024, they must complete all necessary procedures by September 12th, 2024 (Thursday). For those enrolling in April 2025, they must do so by March 13th, 2025 (Thursday), and for those enrolling in October 2025, they must do so by September 11th, 2025 (Thursday). If these deadlines are not met, they will be treated as non-enrollees. The instructions regarding enrolment procedures will be emailed to those enrolling in October 2024 on early September 2024, to those enrolling in April 2025 on late February 2025, and to those enrolling in October 2025 on early September 2025.

10. Notes to be paid attention to

10. 注意事項

(1) In the same term of admission examination for this graduate school (summer entrance exam or winter entrance exam), it is not possible to apply simultaneously in two or more majors, courses, or selection categories. Furthermore, those who have applied for special selection in the Graduate School's Information Processing English Program cannot apply for the Winter Entrance Exam. Additionally, if a student has already passed the Summer Entrance Exam for this graduate school, they are unable to withdraw their enrollment and still apply for the Winter Entrance Exam. Similarly, students who have already qualified for either last year’s Winter Entrance Exam or Special Selection for the Information Processing English Program at this graduate school are also unable to withdraw their enrollment and still apply for the Summer Entrance Exam without prior approval.

(1) 在本研究生院的同一入學考試期間(夏季入學考試或冬季入學考試),不能同時申請兩個或多個專業(yè)、課程或選拔類別。此外,申請研究生院信息處理英語課程特別選拔者不能申請冬季入學考試。此外,如果學生已經(jīng)通過了該研究生院的夏季入學考試,則無法退學并仍然申請冬季入學考試。同樣,已經(jīng)獲得本研究生院去年冬季入學考試或信息處理英語課程特別選拔資格的學生也無法退學,無需事先批準即可申請夏季入學考試。

(2) It is not possible to enroll in this research department while also enrolling at another university or other graduate school of our institution.

(3) If the documents listed in Article 7 are not completed by the deadline, the application will not be accepted. However, for TOEFL scores, it shall follow the provisions of Appendix "Tokyo University Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering Entrance Examination TOEFL Score Submission Requirements for Fiscal Year Heisei 7 (2025)". Furthermore, after the application process is complete, no changes to the documents will be allowed under any circumstances, nor will refunds on examination fees be given.

(5) Those who wish for special consideration due to disabilities or other reasons should submit their request during the application period to the Admission Office of this Graduate School (see below 11.).

The person approving this should not have any restrictions on their position if it is higher than theirs.

Additionally, this personal information along with scores used in admissions selection are only utilized for matters related to students, including: ① Academic affairs (enrollment records, study progress etc.), ② Student support services (health management, job placement assistance, tuition fee exemption/scholarship applications, library use etc.) and ③ Collection of tuition fees.

Inquiries about applications should be made by email rather than phone.

The creation and submission of application documents should be done well in advance, not at the last minute. If there are any uncertainties, inquiries can be made with sufficient time before the deadline. It may take several business days for responses to arrive, so it is important to inquire about various deadlines with enough lead time. Especially during summer entrance exams, which coincide with Obon holidays and weekends, long periods without response will occur due to overlapping schedules, so extra attention must be paid.
